MARSEILLE 0-4 REDS: THE REPORT

Benfica '84, Juventus '05, Barcelona '07. Now you can add Marseille 2007 to the list of Liverpool's great European away days after Rafa's Reds defied the odds to book their place in the Champions League last 16.

Three must-win games, three wins; the latest of which, a 4-0 victory in the south of France, was achieved with goals from Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel.

A 2-0 win for Porto in the other Group A tie means Liverpool qualify as runners-up, a state of affairs which could see them paired against Carlos Ancelotti's AC Milan once more.

Other possible opponents when the draw is made a week on Friday are Seville, Inter, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

As for Marseille, well no one in a town famous for tarot cards could have foreseen what hit them. Just four minutes had elapsed when Gerrard burst through only to be sliced down by Gael Givet. The skipper missed the subsequent penalty but was there to knock home the rebound.

His 10th goal in 11 games saw him break Michael Owen's club record of 22 goals in Europe.

What a start. Not that you'd know it as the cameras cut to Rafa Benitez, the Spaniard fuming that Givet was neither sent off nor booked for his last-man challenge.

Benitez's grimace was still firm seven minutes later when Torres made Liverpool's lead comfortable. The record signing, after some nice work from Harry Kewell, wriggled his way through the box in a way which is fast becoming his trademark before rolling the ball beyond Steve Mendanda.

A period of containment followed, without Pepe Reina being seriously troubled.

The bold Erik Gerets waited just 33 minutes to shuffle his pack, swapping Benoit Cheyrou for French football's young player of the year, Samir Nasri. It stirred the crowd if nothing else.

Meanwhile, Liverpool began to probe once more, Torres almost finding himself through only to be denied by the referee's whistle. His two-word reaction to the supposed foul showed his English is coming along just fine.

There followed a raft of chances to make it three, the best of which perhaps fell to the lively Kewell. Unfortunately, Liverpool's number seven volleyed narrowly over after the ball fell invitingly in the box.

Torres should have bagged his 13th of the season two minutes before the break after leaving Julien Rodriguez for dead in just three steps. Again the finish was just the wrong side of the bar.

Gerets swapped one Anfield old boy for another at the break, introducing Djibril Cisse at the expense of the quiet Bolo Zenden. Any hopes he could inspire a miracle comeback lasted just two minutes, however, after Kuyt fired a third into Mendanda's net.

The Dutchman hit the top corner from the edge of the six-yard box following a teasing ball from Kewell down the left. The travelling Kop, with co-owner George Gillett in their number, went ballistic.

With the result beyond doubt, Benitez used the opportunity to rest some of his key men ahead of Sunday's clash with Man Utd. First Kewell made way, then the unstoppable Torres.

There'll be plenty more Champions League football for the number nine in a few months' time.

All that was left was a now customary late strike from substitute Babel. Happy days.
